Late Season Lake Erie Duck Hunting Goldeneye

Last week of duck hunting off Lake Erie. Shorelines starting to freeze up. Found some open water on a strong Nort West wind. Set a small spread, natural look. Key here is to outsmart the birds. These are smart birds by now. Small spread, did not call. Also, chose a well hidden blind and hid well. Must be carefull not to flare these late season birds. Good number of birds as I knocked down four skirting my spread. 2 Common Merganzers and 2 Goldeneyes.
Great day to enjoy Late Season action.

Went for a mid season pheasant hunt on PA gamelands in Warren County. Got a nice pair of birds, a hen and a ringneck. Pushed hard through the brush. Found birds on the edges of fields in tight cover. Birds were holding extra tight, and needed a good dog to launch them. Fun day to be chasing these tasty birds.

Fall Perch Run Presque Isle Bay

Decided to try some Fall fishing in Presque Isle Bay. Water temp has been dropping with cooler nights and this triggers fish. Fall fishing can be fantastic. Fish gorge as they prepare for winter. Caught over 100 perch in 3 hours. One pole is all I could handle. A mix of sizes. Kept from 8 inch to a nice jumbo at 14. The bite was steady from first light till about 11:00am. Very eager fish. They often hooked themselves and had many doubles. Kept only fish that were fillet worthy. Very fast action.

Woodchuck Fever In PA Farm Fields

My son is hooked on Woodchuck hunting. Took him out for another evening trip. He blasted a young one at 47 yds with one shot of his Savage .17 HMR. Right through the head! Didn't take a step from the hole. Just the face was learking from the hole and my son nailed him. Great sport to get kids interested in markmanship and hunting!

Woodchuck Hunting In Erie County PA

Took my son out tonight for his first woodchuck hunting trip. We set up in a field in North East PA. Waited about an hour and saw a nice chuck about 60 yards away. My son used a .17 Savage HMR. Great shot through the head and exploding the
skull plate. Dead on impact! He was very excited, as I was, for his first chuck kill. Very proud of him. Woodchuck hunting in PA can be a fun sport. You need a flat shooting rifle(I recommend the .17HMR)and a nice pair of binoculars. I also like using a Laser Rangefinder to get accurate distance on long shots. Be patient and set up quietly on the edge of a field. Well placed shots to the head or chest really do the trick. He was so excited and now wants to head out to the field agian!

Softshell Turtle Caught Off South Pier In Erie PA

Today I went to the pier to fish with my children. We caught several sheepshead, bluegills, and silverbass. Interestingly, my pole almost went in the water as I had a hard bite. Reeled in a large softshell turtle. I very carefully cut the line and released unharmed. Was an amazing sight. Largest size softshell I have ever seen. barely fit in my net.
Made the day of a lazy summer fishing trip.

Perch Boating Season A Good One On Lake Erie

My buddy invited me on a fishing trip on his boat today on Lake Erie. We made our trip out to the point in 55ft of water. Many boats in the perch pack, but we went about 150 yds outside the pack to the West and anchored. Caught our limits in about two hours and headed back to the marina. Perch were biting good on live emerald shiners. Lesson to be learned, you don't have to be in the perch pack to get them. Use them for a locator, and find more aggressive fish outside the pack.

Panfish Abundant In Erie Bayfront

Took my son for an evening of panfishing. Went to the Erie PA bayfront and tried a nice spot. You can fish just about anywhere along the bayfront and catch panfish. Caught several bluegill, perch, rockbass, and crappie. Kept about a dozen keepers and threw the dinks back. Lots of action!

Pennsylvania Lakes Great Fishing On Canoe

Took my son out for an evening canoe fishing trip on a local small lake in northwest Pennsylvania. Caught some Largemouth Bass and several nice Bluegills. Great action and fun. There are many small inland lakes in PA, and all are worth trying. With the canoe, it allows you to get away from the crowds and find deeper water.

Slab Humpback Bluegill Abundant In Lake Pleasant

Toook my son to Lake Pleasant to do some evening fishing. Fished an hour or so with no bite, but then just before dark the Big Blues were hungry. Landed 18 slabs, very hearty fish. Also 2 nice Largemouth. Bluegill fillets are excellent tablefare and will be enjoyed in the fryer.

Nice Slab Black Crappie In Presque Isle Bay

Decided to search for crappie since the perch have seemed to move out. Went wading in a favorite local hotspot in the lagoons of Presque Isle Bay. Had the place to myself, as most people have given up on the spot. I chased a few remaining spawning crappie. Got into some nice slab black crappie. Used an ice jig tipped wih a shiner. About a foot under the bobber and waded around. Nice mess of fish with a couple of nice perch mixed in.

White Perch Abundant At Erie PA Pier

Took my son night fishing and we had an action filled evening. A large school of fat White Perch were off the pier and hitting hard. Caught a bucket full in strong SouthEast winds just before a front. Also caught rock bass, sheepshead, silver bass, and
a few nice yellow perch. The bite was on. The only bad thing was realizing this is clearly an end to the perch season. Yellow perch will soon be gone. I give it a week.

Perch Still Remain In Lake Erie Channel

Headed to the pier for a morning of fishing. Windy, strong East and cold temps. Bite was good, landing a nice pile of perch. Size was on the smaller side, releasing many dinks. Perch fishing has been tough this year, not yielding large numbers of fish. With the water temp climbing,I only see about 2 weeks left of perchin.

My son got up early at 5:00 to fish the cold waters of Lake Erie today. Slow bite, only managed three Perch. But they were monsters! 14+ inches with huge girth. Nice fish, but the sunny weather made for slow fishing. He also caught a smallmouth bass. Cold, sunny day. Not a good perchin day. Will be out Monday morning!

Perch Season Fair To Good On Lake Erie

Had some time off work this week and have been hitting spots along the Erie Bay front. Found perch at every outing, but not in great numbers. Size has been good, with consistent catches. So far not many limit days of perch. Weather has been too good. No fronts this week to keep them active. Bite has been real early or real late. No in between perch like last year with wet rainy weather. Been fishing every morning, with the bite slowing by 8:00am. Here are some pics from this week. The run should get better in the upcoming weeks.

Kept 15 nice quality perch, threw back about the same. After 9:00am the bite completely stopped. Saw many lunkers pulled in over the wall.

Lake Erie Spring Perch Fishing Hot In Bay

I ventured out this afternoon in search of Lake Erie perch. Day was miserable, SouthEast winds with consistent wet rain. Cold, bitter, and drenching. Sat 2 hours in the afternoon and came up with a bucket of nice big perch. Perch were fat, and hit consistently in this weather. Fished along the bayfront and had the spot to myself. Amazing the perch are in this spot so early. water temp is rising fast and perch are heading to the channel. Will be out in the am.

No Ice Fishing Yet On Presque Isle Lake Erie 2012

Here it is in February in Erie PA and I wake up to warm temps. Sunny and warm today hitting 45 degrees. Our bay, which is loaded with yummy yellow perch is totally open water. In 40 years I do not remember open water in February. Last year we had a good 10 weeeks of solid ice for ice fishing. My question is, how will this affect the perch fishing for the upcoming 2012 season? Usually in February the perch are in the deepest parts of the channel and can be readily caught through the ice. Pier fishing usually begins in mid to late March and you can find the perch starting along the Western part of the Erie bay front. Here it is is in February, no ice and I have confirmed reports of Perch hitting on the Western piers. Big lake Perch come in from Lake Erie and spawn in our Bay. They blow their eggs, follow the emerald shiners out through the channel and into our lake to head for deep water. The best perch fishing is from the piers in mid to late April. What happens now? My thought is this will be a very early season with difficult cold winter shore fishing fighting high Northeast winds. My guess is the perch will be long gone by late March and anglers will miss the run. I suggest trying now for perch, and yes I already have been chasing them. The bite will be hot in February and early March! This is my prediction. Dress warm and be careful out there.

2012 Perch Season Underway Lake Erie

With a mild winter with no ice fishing in sight, I decided to take my boy to do some pier fishing for yellow perch. Never in 40 years have I seen open water in the Bay of Presque Isle in February. Had a few hits from shore, caught some small perch. Even had double headers. My son nailed a nice perch before dusk and had first perch of the year for the bucket.
