Chukars Abundant on Game Preserve Albion PA

Went to a local Game Preserve in Albion PA to do some Chukar hunting. Took a few kids to enjoy walking and learning the sport of bird hunting. Got some good action with a pile of birds to clean for the freezer. New pup was hot today. Found several birds and worked the scent trails endlessly. Kids had a lot of fun. Nice place to bird hunt, reasonable rates. Give them a try sometime.

Pheasants And Chukar Hit Hard In Pennsylvania

Went on a special bird hunt at a local game farm in Pennsylvania. Two of us filled the truck with birds with heavy shooting. New dog found droves of birds as I put down 17 birds. Amazing time and great day for the dog. Dog got lots of scent and learned quickly how to locate birds. She did great locating, tracking, and retrieving birds. Very impressed as she is just 7 months old. Good Chesapeake Bay Retriever instincts at work.

Bluebills Hit Hard With Steel On Presque Isle

Went out for an early morning hunt on Presque Isle. Got into a flock of Bluebills with some hunting buddies and hit them hard. One large group of birds decoyed and we smacked them. Rest of day was very slow with unseasonal warm temps for November in Erie PA. Still waiting for a snow storm!

Scaup And Bufflehead Duck Hunting Lake Erie

Went out for a early duck hunt on Lake Erie. Lots of sun and warmer temps. Not a great duck day, but was able to knock down two birds. Drake bufflehead and a hen Scaup. Duck hunting should get much better as the weather worsens.

Fall Perch Action On Lake Erie

Decided to try something different. Had a beautiful Sunday for November in Erie PA. Went down to the Bay to try for perch. Most anglers are targeting Steelhead at this time in the tribs, but why not perch? Had constant bite with perch being landed easily. Caught at least 30 perch in a couple of hours. Only kept 4 of any eating size though. Had fun with the bite and my son caught several on his own. Fall is a great time to fish the shoreline as the water temp is dropping and the fish are hungry feeding before winter.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever Finds First Ringnecks

Took my new 7 month old puppy to a local Erie County gameland to do some late season pheasant hunting. She did well and found some beautiful ringnecks. She worked hard all morning, learning scent skills and becoming more aggressive on birds. Looks to be a great hunter and will do even better next year.

Quality Duck Blind A Must For Duck Hunting

Just some tips on setting up your duck blind for the upcoming season. A quality duck blind is a must to ensure comfort and safety while hunting. Over a decade ago, my hunting friends and I constructed a blind that is still holding strong. You must use treated wood, especially in the cold and wet NorthEast. This will ensure longevity. Also, I recommend 3/4 inch plywood or thicker, to withstand strong winds and add weight. If you use too thin, don't expect it to last. Size does matter. We constructed a 12 by 6 design. This is great for a party of up to 5 guys, and don't forget about the dogs!. To small of a blind leads to cramped conditions and muzzles blasting too close for comfort. Dog doors are great. Gun holders are a safe option also, with all the craziness that goes on in the blind when the hunting is fast and furious. Camo is important. I utilize the natural surroundings. Use driftwood, brush, deadgrass, sand, ect to make a realistic and cheap approach. Also, make sure your blind is far away enough off the bank. You must not forget about rising tides and storms. I use cinderblocks or stilts to stay off the water and keep dry. Placement is also critical. Scout the terrain, look for vantage points and concealed areas. Point the blind in the direction of shooting lanes and away from NorthEast winds. Duck hunting is a blast with friends, as long as you have a well built and comfortable blind.

Hen Surf Scoter On Presque Isle Opening Day

Was excited to start the season of duck hunting off Presque Isle State Park in Erie PA. Got to the blind early, had a good decoy set and waited. Weather was on and off rain. South wind. Only had a single come to the decoys all morning. A hen Surf Scoter. Overall a slow first start, but as the weather turns it will get much better.

First Day Pheasant Chesapeake Bay Retriever Pup

Had an exciting day on the opener of pheasant season. Went to a Warren County Gamelands and pushed big fields all morning. Banged some nice fat hens. Great day, cool weather, perfect for walking and plenty of dew on the ground for the dog to scent. Broke in my new pup on her first hunt. She worked hard, nose to the ground. Had no problems with gun shyness or range. A Chesapeake Retriever, with great nose and endurance. Tackled some big brush and was thorough through the thickets. Showed some great promise on her first hunt. She is only 6 months old. Hopefully my luck will continue with her.

Erie Bayfront Still Producing Fish

Took my son for an evening of fishing along Erie's bayfront. Caught many perch, mostly in the smaller range with a few keepers. Landed two nice Sheepshead that were very good fighters for my son. A nice calm night on the Bay with the fish turning on just before dusk.

Limit Of Perch Onboard O Danny O Charter

Took my son out for a treat this evening on his first perch fishing charter. We headed out off the point and bagged a two limit of 60 perch in about 3 hours. Had a great time, would recommend this boat for anyone. Nice boat, handled strong East winds with no problem and landed on a ton of perch on the first drop. Deck hand Justin did a great job keeping everyone happy. My son had a blast and now is really turned on to perch fishing.

Huge Musky In PA Small Water

Took the kids fishing for panfish at a local farm pond south of Erie. My daughter used a large glo jig head with a crawler on. Her line went screaming and a mighty fish went airborne. Monstrous in size, she fought it for over a half an hour. Believe it or not, she was using a Zebco 202. Finally after exhausting the fish, we were able to drag it to the shoreline. Fish had to be up to 5 foot and 25+ pounds. I did not try to net the fish(did not have a net that size anyways) or try to harm the fish by taking it out of the water. Steep bank, had no chance lifting it anyways. Just bent down and cut the line when fish was in the water. water was stained and murky, went fishing right after the rain. Daughters rod broke in half after fighting the fish 30 minutes and hand lined exhausted fish to shore. Fish revived once unhooked, made a large splash and headed for deeper water. An amazing experience for all of us.

Green Sunfish At Woodcock Stream

Took the kids for another overnight camping trip to Colonel Crawford Park in Woodcock Crawford County. Ran into a school of Green sunfish. Really cool fish. Very aggressive, colorful, with large mouth and colored highlights on the tips of the fins. Note the coloration differences to the common bluegill or other species of sunfish.

Camping & Fishing On Pennsylvania State Parks

Took the kids to one of our beautiful PA State Parks. We are so lucky to have some great areas to fish and camp. Kids caught plenty of fish, and quite a few jumbo Bluegill. Some of my favorites include Pymatuming, Woodcock, and Chapman Dam. All 3 of these choices offer excellent fishing, good hunting nearby, and clean facilities. We opted for tent camping, and found a nice quiet rustic spot. Enjoyed watching wildlife and took some time to enjoy the water for some fishing. All three spots are worth exploring, as each have their own varieties of fishing and hunting opportunities. Panfish are quite abundant, as well as larger species including Walleye and Musky. Saw plenty of deer, and Bear are not far away for great hunting choices. There are some nice sites in each park, with quiet settings with woods. Just a great time to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Flagship Niagara Sails Through Channel In Lake Erie

While fishing for bluegill last evening on the South Pier, I had the pleasure of watching a magnificent vessel. The Flagship Niagara went through the channel. It is the Flagship Of Pennsylvania and the warship that won the Battle Of Lake Erie in the War of 1812. She first set sail in 1990, a reconstruction of Oliver Hazard Perry's victorious 1813 warship. It is owned and maintained by Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. We are lucky to have this wonderful piece of history in our hometown of Erie PA.

Lake Erie Walleye Move Off North East Marina

Fished for Walleye this morning on Lake Erie Off of North east marina. Fished in 55 ft of water right due North of the Marina. Drifted Crawler Harnesses and had three on and landed 2 nice fish. A 28 incher and a 30. Lake was calm, made drifting difficult. Would have caught more with choppy water. Great day to be on the Lake.

Lake Erie Boating For Schools Of Yellow Perch

Was lucky to get on Lake Erie today. My buddy called me late last night and said he had a spot open on his boat. My first time on open water this year. Small old boat, a 16 ft Larson. We headed out from the launch at 6:15 and returned with our limits of yellow perch by 9:30. I was done in an hour and a half, 30 in the bucket. We were in about 60 ft of water off the Lighthouse. Large pack of boats, at least 75-100 were there. It is not hard to find the perch pack. A simple bit of advice is to anchor down just outside the pack. We scanned the fish finder and found a large school on the bottom just north of the pack. This is a great tactic, fish usually less spooked and you will have an area of feeding fish to yourself. Used spreaders and live emerald shiners. Constant action off the bottom. Looking forward to going again.

Great Blue Heron Friendly To South Pier Fishermen

Just about every time I fished the South Pier at Erie PA there was an amazing sight. A local Great Blue Heron was close by, enjoying the company of the local fishermen. The locals would frequently throw gobies to it, and it has become quite friendly. You can get to about 15 feet of it, and it willingly will accept any fish you toss at it. We have named it "Mike", after one of our fishing buddies that has recently not been fishing with the perch pack. Now we can at least say "We saw Mike today at the pier." Great Blue Herons are the largest of the Herons. They can have a wing span of up to 79 inches and weigh up to 8 ponds. They are found throughout North America, and feed upon small fish and swallow them whole. Just a pretty cool thing to see up close.

The Presque Isle Tug/Barge Vessel Arrives In Erie

As I was recently fishing the South Pier with my son, we had an amazing view of a very large vessel. The Presque Isle Tug went through the channel. This was a push tug, part of a tug/barge combo. Used to carry dry cargo. Has been chartered to the Great Lakes Fleet. Built in 1972, and has a total power output 14.840 bhp and rated service speed of 14 knots. Pretty cool to watch. Great to have these amazing vessels in Erie!

Warm Water Brings Variety Of Fish

Water temp warming up the bay and Lake Erie. Went to the pier to see what was biting. Assorted variety of fish. My son had fun catching many sheepshead and rock bass. Also had a smallmouth on. Fun fishing, nice weather. Saw one perch on a stringer, getting too warm for the perch now. Still plenty of action off the piers with other species.

Took my son to Presque Isle for some pan fishing for the last hour of night. Son caught 3 jumbo crappie (all over 12 in) and a couple of rock bass. First crappie of the year. Water temp 51 with stained water clarity. Will check that spot again in the am this weekend.Come on Mike, crappie. Your favorite. Missing the best spring fishing in a long time.

South Pier Still Holding Fish Perch Active

Went to the South Pier today to see if Perch were still there. Caught over 50 perch, keeping 17 fish. Action was good, especially at first light. Non stop action first 2 hours. Tried to go off the end, but even getting there in the dark was too late. About 20 guys lined up by 5:30am. Went to a different spot, had it to myself, and caught many small fish. 17 were 8-10 inches. Guys off the end limited with jumbos, but you have to camp out to get the spot. Water temp still cold 46 deg. Perch still holding. Wonder if Mike will ever get out before the end of the run. I am betting he won't.

South Pier Big Perch At Evening

Went to South Pier tonight to meet a good friend. Got to the pier around 6:30 and instantly started catching fish. Nice thick perch. Also caught rock bass and a mud puppy. My son had a great time pulling them in. Channel is still thick with perch. With water temps slowly rising, couple of weeks and they will be gone. Now is the time to target big perch from the piers.

Time is running out.

Trout Fishing Action For The Kids

Took the kids to a local trout area for some spring time action. Fished for two hours, and no bite. At dusk, the dinner bell rang and landed 6 beautiful trout. 5 brookies, and 1 brown. One brook trout my son landed measured 15 inches. They had a blast till dark.

South Pier Continues To Produce Many Perch

pier fishing is at the height of the season. Limit catches are becoming quite common. Yesterday I landed 25 perch and the action was quite steady throughout the morning. North east winds were cold, and current was strong, but loads of fish were present. The only warning sign was that for the first time, junk fish began moving in. I caught rock bass, gobies, sheepshead, and even a mudpuppy. Landed well over 50 fish, it doesn't get much better.

South Pier Yields Limit On First Attempt

Went out fishing at daylight today. Decided to try South Pier for first time this year. Made a few moves, and found the spot. Got a 30 perch limit. Size from 8-14 inches. North East wind, frigid. Steady rain. Was soaked and miserable, but pounding perch. Couldn't feel hands or legs, wind terrible with rain soaking in. Braved it for a limit of perch. Gotta give credit to my buddy Jeff for sticking it out with me. When I left he was close to filling his limit and as a true die hard percher, was still fighting the weather. Outstanding bite today with perch everywhere. Can't wait to chase them again. So far a great run in the bay this year for Lake Erie Perch.
